Hiking Maps
So you found a destination that you want to explore; how do you map it out? Excellent question.
When I first started hiking in Switzerland, I didn’t know about hiking map apps, so I would try to follow the trails using the yellow markers and screenshots on my phone. However, this is very limiting in finding new trails and difficult to follow. No one wants to be squinting down at their phone during a peaceful day in nature. Thankfully with the help of my fellow explorer, Philip, I discovered Swiss Topo, which opened up a new world of hiking to me.
Swiss Topo is very reliable and easy to use. It is run by Swiss Federal Office of Topography. This app is very precise for hiking and shows all the available trails. In the video tutorial, I will go through all the features and tricks of using the app. The app is even connected to the SBB (public transport) app, so you can seamlessly navigate your way from the public transport stop to the trail and back. You can use it to create your own tours or you can upload .gpx files from recommended hikes.
