Weisshorn, Arosa: Panoramic views of over 400 peaks

Approaching the top of Weisshorn

The entire snow hike experience here is intense, from the views to the physical endurance.

758 meters up, 758 down.

The physical intensity can be lowered by taking a gondola up to the Middle-station and/or from the Middle-station to the top. The technical intensity can be lowered by taking the gondola down from the Berg-station to the Middle-station or from the Middle-station to the bottom. The hike is actually shown as two separate winter hikes one from Innerarosa to Mittelstation and one from Mittelstation to Weisshorn. Together these hikes create an unforgettable and incredible experience.

The first time that I did this hike, I walked up and took the cable car from the Berg-station to the Mittelstation since I was with a large group of friends and it was becoming late in the day quite quickly. I was so amazed by the hike that I did the full hike with my partner the next weekend. Again, it was absolutely incredible and I enjoyed the challenge of coming down the mountain. However, I would recommend crampons or poles because the way down can be quite steep and occasionally icy in the late afternoon. Poles are also helpful when climbing up since the incline can be quite intense.

The top is especially intense because it becomes very cold and windy quickly. It is like being in another world on the top. My bag frozen and crinkled as if I were in space.

Frozen lake part way up

Right before the top, there was a current of snow circling above us. It looked so magical as if a million microscopic diamonds were floating above us. The video below shows the 400 peak view, the snow blowing, and the mystical “blue hour”. Blue hour is right after sunset in the mountains during the winter when the snow glows light blue. Every Swiss treasures this time of day.
