Martin’s Hole: A biannual wonder
Martin’s hole is an usual geological formation where a hole formed in a chain of pointy mountains near the Glarus town of Elm. On two days twice a year, the sun perfectly rises through the hole and shines on the clock face of the local church. The winter walk can be done on the March 12/13 dates; however, on the September 30/October 1 dates there are plenty of summer hikes still available nearby. More information about the phenomenon can be found here: Link to MySwitzerland article
When we first arrived right before sunrise, we positioned ourselves in front of the church. The anticipated moment occurred at around 8:50am. It was one of the most incredible and unusual natural phenomenons that I have ever experienced.
After the incredible sunrise, we journeyed to Elm, Sportbahnen to take a gondola up to Empächli were there was a short winter walk with amazing views of the mountains including Martin’s hole. There were also a bunch of old, traditional huts along the trail. At the furthest point of the winter walk there was scenic restaurant, Berghotel Bischofalp, were we stopped to admire the view from the patio.
